A boat carrying migrants capsized off the coast of Mauritania, killing 69 people. The boat capsized when migrants saw the lights of a town and moved to one side. A senior coastguard official confirmed that 17 people were rescued. The boat had left The Gambia a week earlier with around 160 people on board. Drownings are common during the dangerous crossing between Africa and Europe, with strong ocean currents and ramshackle vessels making the journey hazardous.
