US District Judge Jia Cobb has blocked the Trump administration from expanding the expedited removal procedure, which allows authorities to deport migrants without a court hearing.
The process, which had previously been used to detain migrants near the Mexican border, has been expanded across the country since January.
Cobb argued that the expanded use could lead to people being “erroneously” deported without due process, including the chance to prove they have been in the US for more than two years.
The ruling was in a case brought by Make The Road New York, a rights group supporting migrants.
Trump’s mass deportation program has been restricted by numerous court rulings, notably on the grounds that those targeted should be able to assert their due process rights.
