The House of Representatives has rejected the US Senate’s initiative to designate Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” (CPC) due to religious freedom violations.
The designation, suggested in the Nigeria Religious Freedom Accountability Act of 2025, would impose sanctions on Nigerian officials.
Deputy Speaker Rep. Benjamin Kalu argued that Nigeria respects religious rights and dismissed claims linking security issues to religious conflict.
Other representatives echoed the need to counter misinformation and protect Nigeria’s international image.
The motion was adopted and referred to the committees on Foreign Affairs and Police for further action.
