The Senate has postponed further consideration of a bill to repeal the Electoral Act No. 13, 2022, and enact the Electoral Act 2025.
The move was made by Senate Leader, Sen. Opeyemi Bamidele, who believes it is not time for executive session to discuss the bill.
Senator Abba Moro also stressed the need for further consultations on the bill.
The bill, presented by Senator Simon Lalong, is a comprehensive reform, repeal, and enactment aimed at providing Nigeria with a stronger, more credible, and inclusive electoral framework.
Lalong emphasized the need for transparency, efficiency, and integrity in the electoral process, ensuring free and fair competition, and reducing electoral malpractices.
The bill also aims to strengthen the independence of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) by insulating it from government interference.
