Bago’s trip to Brazil in company of the president It is a significant opportunity for Niger State. The access, networking, and potential for investment it provides are substantial advantages that most other state governors do not get. It places Niger State in a potentially favorable position for federal attention and foreign investment, particularly in the critical agricultural sector.
However, it is not an achievement in itself but an opening of a door; the true “big deal” will be walking through it. Nigerlites should see this as a positive step and should measure its true importance by the tangible results vis-a-vis new factories, improved farming techniques, jobs, and infrastructure that (hopefully) follow in the months and years to come.
The biggest immediate benefit of this trip is, the governor gets extended, high-quality, one-on-one time with the President outside of the usual crowded and formal settings in Abuja, which is a prime opportunity to discuss state-specific issues like insecurity, infrastructure projects like the urban renewal, and agricultural development,lobby for federal support and funding, and build a stronger personal and political relationship, which can be crucial for getting things done later.
The delegation to Brazil certainly included high-powered Nigerian business leaders and federal officials. The governor can use this trip to build connections with these individuals, advocating for investment in Niger State tied to the primary purpose of such a visit which includes agricultural development and agro-industrial processing.
Brazil is a global agricultural powerhouse. Since Bago is there, the implicit message is that Niger State, which is also a major agricultural producer in Nigeria has a key role to play in Nigeria’s food security. This positions the state as a central player in national agricultural policy.
Additionally, it is a mark of prestige and shows Bago is in the good graces of the federal government. This can boost his profile both within his party and nationally, and a signal to the people of Niger State that their governor has a “seat at the table” where important decisions are made.
