Bago’s Statement of Selling Niger State A Metaphor for Unwavering Commitment

The recent statement by His Excellency, Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago, regarding the development of Niger State has generated significant discussion online. I understand that the phrase “even if I sell Niger state” can be alarming when taken literally. Therefore, it is crucial to provide context and clarify the Governor’s true intention.

It was a Metaphor, Not a Literal Plan. Governor Bago used a powerful and hyperbolic figure of speech—a metaphor—common in political rhetoric. He did not, in any way, suggest a literal sale of the state or its assets. The statement was a forceful, figurative way to emphasize his absolute and unwavering dedication to seeking resources and opportunities for the state’s development. The core message was: “I am so committed to developing Niger State that I would go to any length within the law to make it happen.”

The Governor was directly responding to critics, opponents and “haters” who may question his methods or spread misinformation. His point was that his primary focus is on the tangible results and progress of his administration, not on the noise from detractors. The rhetorical question, “what’s the haters concern?” underscores that his accountability is to the good people of Niger State, not to those who criticize without constructive alternatives.

The underlying message good citizens of Niger state and well wishers should take away is one of commitment, not liquidation. The Governor was passionately defending his administration’s aggressive pursuit of Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs) of attracting massive private sector investment into the state, securing legitimate loans and grants from development institutions for critical infrastructure projects, and exploring creative and legal financial models to fund projects without placing an undue burden on citizens.

Bago’s visible strides are the tangible evidence of his commitment—the very “development” he was passionately referring to, his comment was a colorful and emphatic way of stating that his administration will not be distracted by criticism and is wholly focused on its mission to transform Niger State. It was a promise of relentless effort, not a policy of disposal. The citizens of Niger State should rest assured that their heritage and assets are secure, and the administration remains focused on its mandate to deliver democratic dividends through lawful and innovative means.

It is time to look beyond the headlines and focus on the ongoing projects and programs that are already bringing positive change to our beloved state.
