I read on Facebook where polo is referred to a “useless game with no value to the masses,” and I could feel the anger from each word as the writers made their points as expected. To say that polo is “useless” is an emotional reaction to its elitist perception, but it’s an over simplification. While acknowledging its elitism and exclusion, lack of participatory access, questionable spectator value, opportunity cost. I also see it as an economic engine room for farriers, grooms, stable managers, groundskeepers, security, hospitality staff and local vendors, I mean you can’t denied that all of these mentioned are also masses you claimed polo has no value to.
Guys, here is the real deal, a government can walk and chew gum at the same time. Is it really so hard to believe that Bago is investing in projects that have direct bearing to the masses, why must it be one or the other.? I understand the concern, but let’s not pretend this is the only thing the Governor has done. Where was this energy when pictures of remolded and expanded IBB Specialist flooded social media few days ago. The Governor is working on all fronts and has demonstrated his commitment to the poor which is glaring in his New Niger Agenda.
People see horses and wealthy spectators. I see the grooms, the stable hands, the caterers, the security personnel, and the local vendors who all earn a living because of that club. This 50 million is an investment in “their” jobs too. Come guys, this money isn’t being burned. It’s being pumped into the local economy. The polo club employs people and hosts events that bring outside money into Minna. That benefits everyone.
Instead of tearing down every initiative, let’s look at the overall progress. Bago is trying to develop every sector. Let’s support that holistic vision for a greater Niger State. I mean, we can disagree on priorities, but let’s not mistake an investment in tourism for a lack of care for the poor. This administration has shown its care through action. This is just one part of a larger puzzle.
