Nigerian State Governor, Mohammed Umaru Bago, has proposed a national agenda for food sovereignty in the country.
Bago’s proposal was made during a keynote address at the 2025 World Food Day celebration, organized by the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA).
The agenda should focus on five priorities: modern and climate-smart farming, reducing post-harvest losses, making credit and inputs work for real farmers, protecting farms and rural communities from insecurity, and anchoring agricultural policy on long-term national plans.
Bago emphasized that these steps are not impossible and that with political will and a clear strategy, Nigeria can achieve genuine food security and self-sufficiency.
He also highlighted investments made by his administration to achieve food security, such as mechanisation, irrigation, value chain development, and strong partnerships.
Bago urged collaboration between government, research institutions, the private sector, communities, and development partners to feed Nigeria and beyond from Nigerian soil.
